The Complete Studio KH Wedding Guide

Section 16:

Planning for Weather

We all hope for clear skies and comfortable temps—fingers crossed—but weather doesn’t always work in our favor. Although fear not! I’ve never seen weather truly dampen anyone’s wedding day. Here’s what to expect (and perhaps assemble) in case conditions aren’t ideal:

Clear umbrellas are your friend! If you want to venture outside alone with your sweetie, one will suffice to keep things intimate and romantic. If you want to keep group shots outdoors, have enough for the entire wedding party. If necessary, we’ll scramble the timeline a bit, going with the flow of the flow, timing portraits accordingly. Also take heart that rarely does it rain the entire day, and it makes for a romantic atmosphere in the meantime.

Rainy Days

High Winds

This is where we get extra crafty with our shooting locations. Let’s strategize our backgrounds to utilize as many indoor spaces as possible. For outdoors, the sheltered side of buildings and groves of trees can mitigate the worst of it. Although I’d caution against venturing too far out into the wind, especially if you’re leaving your hair down, you’re wearing a thin or flowy dress, and if you’ll be wearing a veil. Or you know, there’s always Option B: let’s play in it anyway, embracing the windswept look!

Pack some hand warmers for you and your wedding party. Shooting in winter months is more touch-and-go; if you need breaks, we take them! If you’re feeling up for the elements, I let you make the call. When mapping out our shooting, I’d encourage sticking as close to the venue as possible. To keep you warmer and your ears less red, bring along a jacket to wear between shots. Another detail to consider is how much exposure you want your florals to have to the cold.

Extreme Cold

If most of the settings on your photo wish-list are outdoors, we’ll stick to shade as much as possible and limit our walking. The comfort of you and your crew is the priority, and we can take breaks and plan our shots strategically, especially for family formals with grandparents. If your ceremony space will be extra hot (think lofts and direct midday sun exposure) it’s not a bad idea to have a few handheld battery powered fans available for those that may need them and a cooler of water bottles for your guests.

Extreme Heat

Trust that whatever weather we get to work with on your wedding day, it’ll all be okay! I’ve worked in every kind of condition, and have delivered beautiful collections to happy couples every single time.
