Notes on Sparklers

Sparkler photos are definitely showstoppers, but when you’re lighting stuff on fire, a little extra planning goes a long way.

Options for how you might use your sparklers—

  1. Have all your guests stage two long, parallel lines for you to run through

  2. Pull only your wedding party and families to stage 2 shorter lines to run through

  3. Just the two of you, each holding sparklers

A few places to slot it—

  1. At the end of the night before you hop into your getaway car

  2. At the end of your photo coverage, typically around 9pm

  3. At another transition point after it gets dark, like before first dances

Tips to maximize the moment—

  1. When you’re shopping for sparklers: the longer, the better. Before you hit add-to-cart, please check with your venue to make sure they’ll allow for them.

  2. Make sure to have multiple lighters to help ensure all are lit within a reasonable time.

  3. Once the sparklers start sparkling, be on the ready! If you’re opting for the more common 2 line approach, we’ll be at opposite ends of it with you running towards me.

  4. As long as the sparklers are still lit, don’t stop moving. You’ll probably end up doing 2-3 passes through the line. Throwing in a slow kiss or a twirl midway through is highly encouraged. I’ll try to direct you as best I can, but there will be a lot going on to be able to communicate well!

  5. Prearrange a place to deposit used sparklers. Metal bins are a good idea, and/or a container filled with water or sand.

Like the idea of more end-of-night coverage of just the two of you but don’t want to interrupt the flow of the dance floor? I’m seeing more couples simplify, doing a few PM portraits instead of sparklers, especially when there’s a dress change involved.
